Thus, Brexit looks set to further add to the global number of FTAs in the medium
term. How the global trading system is going to deal with the growing complexity
remains to be seen.
On the one hand, it has become increasingly clear through-
out past years that growing and more heterogeneous membership of the WTO
can make it difficult to reach consensus at the multilateral level (for example on
services).
At the same time, at some point it might be easier to work out a pluri-
lateral or multilateral consensus on issues rather than having to deal with an
increasingly more complex set of bilateral accords.
