English is by far the best known foreign language

The official language is German. English is by far the best known foreign
language and is generally accepted as the common medium for all forms of
communication abroad. It is also quite usual for educated Germans to have a
good command of at least one other foreign language, the most widespread
being French, Italian, Spanish, and the various Slav languages.
