Most German industry is dynamic and, except in the depressed areas,
expanding. The state does not encourage the development of specific industries
as a deliberate act of policy, but it does offer substantial subsidies and other
support for, in particular, research and development likely to lead to new
marketable products. There is thus a move toward high-tech industries and the
more sophisticated parts of the services sector are also expanding.
The labour
force numbers some 41.2 million gainfully employed by 3.6 million enterprises.
23% of the latter are corporate entities, the remainder being partnerships, sole
traders and public utilities.
