Germany: The major host country
Measured against the number of first-time asylum applications, the refugees are
unevenly distributed in the EU.
Among the nearly 3.7 m applications filed in the
EU in total in the past four years, the shares of Germany, Italy, France and
Sweden stand at 42%, 11%, 8% and 7.5%, respectively, but at only less than 1%
for Poland. In relation to the resident population, the distribution is lopsided, too.
While Germany registered 5.4 and 8.8 applicants per 1,000 inhabitants in 2015
and 2016, the respective figures for France and the UK were about 1.1 and 0.6.
