Integrating immigrants effectively
Immigration has risen strongly since 2011, at first mostly on account of inflows from
east and southern Europe in the context of the euro area debt and economic crisis.
It accelerated sharply in 2015 with the arrival of around 1 million humanitarian immigrants
seeking asylum (1.2% of the German population). This is considerably more than the number
of registered asylum requests shown in stats, reflecting the time lag between their
arrival and the application for asylum.
In the first half of 2015, 30% of asylum seekers were
youth or children while 50% are adults below 35 years. Most asylum seekers are from the
Middle East and east Africa, and are expected to stay. But they are getting jobs only slowly.
