The German economy was badly affected by the financial and economic crisis and the standstill in the global
economy at the end of 2008. Contrary to what many people had thought, however, the German economy
recovered quickly, indeed more quickly than most other countries in the Euro zone. Fears that the German
economy would again become the ‘sick man of Europe’ – as in the early years of the monetary union – proved
illusory.
