Utility models
Similar to a patent, a utility model gives its owner the exclusive
right to use a technical invention for a duration of 10 years from
the day following the filing of the application.
Contrary to patent applications, the DPMA does not verify during
the application process whether the subject matter of a utility
model is novel, involves an inventive step, or is susceptible of
industrial application. A review will be conducted only if a third
party challenges the utility model by filing a request for cancel-
lation.
While a patent application might take several years to be grant-
ed, the utility model can be entered into the Register already a
few weeks after the application was filed.
